Samuel Paul Osborne (born 10 January 1999) is an English professional footballer who currently plays for National League North side AFC Fylde. Osborne started his youth career at Dunkirk before moving to Notts County in 2016 where he played for four years, winning two Young Player of the Season awards in a row before moving to the Warwickshire side in 2020.

Football career[edit]

Early career[edit]

Osborne joined football club Dunkirk F.C. at the age of six years old playing for their colts. After playing at Dunkirk F.C. for four years, while still at school, Osborne played for Burton Albion F.C. for four and half years before progressing to the senior team of Dunkirk F.C. for the 2015–16 season.[3]

Notts County[edit]

Osborne began his professional career with Notts County[4] in 2016 when he signed at the club on a two year scholarship. The winger went on to score numerous goals and win Academy Player of the Year 2016-17. After his success in the Under 18s, Osborne made his professional debut on 7 January 2017 in a 4–1 defeat away at Morecambe.[5] Later that year a brace from the winger saw the Magpies win their Central League Cup group against Osborne's previous club Burton Albion F.C.[6] At the beginning of 2019, the winger hit his sixth goal in six games as he opened the scoring for Notts County Under U23s in their 2-2 draw with Newcastle United F.C.[7] The winger played a prolific role in helping the Notts County U23s to the Central League Cup final and U23s Premier League Cup group stages. After scoring eleven goals in eleven games for the U23s, Osborne was awarded Young Player of the Year 2018-19. At just 19 Osborne had made six senior appearances for the Magpies, when most recently turning out against Newcastle United’s Under 21s. His performance in that match, along with his continued development in training, was enough to convince technical director Paul Hart that he was ready to sign pro terms.[8] Osborne scored his first senior goal in September 2019, the 'dream goal' [9] netted the second in a 2-1 win at Boreham Wood away, and his strike was voted Goal of the Month by supporters[10] and The youngster then made a further 19 appreances for the magies scoring three goals and create four assists, also helping them to the FA Vase semi final and Vanarama league play off final.

Grantham Town (loan)[edit]

During the 2017-18 season, Osborne had a spell at Granthan Town F.C. where he received fifteen appearances, scoring 8. Playing a big role within the team, Osborne supported their challenge within the Evo-Stick Premier play off final.

Leamington[edit]

Osborne was offered a new contract by Notts County at the end of the 2019/20 season, however he refused this in order to get first team football elsewhere. He moved to Vanarama National League North side Leamington after recommendation from ex-Leamington and current Accrington Stanley forward Colby Bishop,[11] who also came through Notts County's academy. The youngster scored his first Leamington goals in Leamington's unbelievable 4-3 win over Alfreton Town F.C. having come back from a 3-0 half time deficit. The game was mocked up as 'Leamstanbul' by the club's celebratory social media admin. In November, he won the Vanarama National League North Player of the Month award as his side went the month unbeaten.

AFC Fylde[edit]

On 9 January 2021, Osborne signed for National League North side AFC Fylde for an undisclosed fee.[12]

Drivers

In this scene from RIDERS OF THE DESERT (Sono Art-World Wide, 1932), Floyd 'Silver Tip' Baker has the stage and team runnin' full speed while Bob Steele has the drop on him. Baker was a performer with the Miller Bros. 101 Ranch Wild West Show and the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show and his movie work began in the early 1920s.

Les Adams writes about the drivers of stages, wagons, et al:
Just about everybody was cast as a stage driver at some point ... nearly. Bud Osborne, of course, more than any, but it is difficult to recognize the Yrigoyen brothers, George Plues, Post Park, Bob Woodward, Yakima Canutt, Cliff Lyons or Wally West who may have been at the reins when it came to stage races, crashes and other hazardous bits that the customary players did not do. Several of the above such as Plues and Park had 'driving' as their speciality.
Aside from the above, the primary-cast players as drivers were: Hank Bell, Tex Cooper, Silver Tip Baker, Fred Burns, Bob Burns, Archie Ricks, Bud McClure, Tex Palmer, Jack Rockwell, Edmund Cobb, Glenn Strange, Cactus Mack McPeters, and Jack Kirk (who was probably second only to Osborne in terms of visibility).
Most of the ones mentioned in the first paragraph fall into the stunt men group. The second paragraph list are familiar faces that did many other roles.
But all of them together drove a whole lot of stages. More than a whole lot.
Stage Driver kind of fell into two classes:

1. the Burns brothers, Jack Kirk, Hank Bell and others handled the reins in regular action.

2. George Plues, Post Park and other stunt drivers took the reins when fast action chases and maneuvering on cliffs and around curves were part of the script. They also handled a lot of driver roles such as when the stage had to accurately come to a stop in front of the local express office.

(From Old Corral collection)
One of Bud Osborne's most requested and remembered movie jobs - driving a stage.

The Burns Brothers - Bob and Fred - were frequent drivers.
Both are driving stages in Dick Foran's CALIFORNIA MAIL (Warners, 1936). Fred is handling the reins during a stagecoach race, while Bob is the driver of a stage that gets held up.

From RAIDERS OF SAN JOAQUIN (Universal, 1943) - an unidentifed double for Johnny Mack Brown leaps on to the stage. The driver may be George Plues. Les Adams added an appropriate comment on this shot: 'the people doing the rein work had to be good. Check how close to the rock he had to get the team and wagon ... and they weren't walking.'

At the reins is Bud McClure in the Johnny Mack Brown BOSS OF BULLION CITY (Universal, 1940).
Above from L-to-R are Post Park (real name: Custer B. Park), Jimmy Wakely and Milburn Morante in RIDIN' DOWN THE TRAIL (Monogram, 1947). The arm-in-a-cast for Park was an excuse for Wakely to handle the reins, but if Jimmy got into trouble, Park was ready to take over.

Above from L-to-R are Jack Kirk (drivin' the wagon) while Roy Rogers has Yakima Canutt and Pascale Perry under his six-gun in this crop from a lobby card from BAD MAN OF DEADWOOD (Republic, 1941). Among stuntman Yak's many talents was handling the reins of a wagon or stage.
Above - George Sowards is handling the reins of the stage in this still from an unidentified early 1950s western.
